Language delays and disorders are a condition in which the child’s language level reflects that of a chronologically younger child. Language disorders fall into one or two areas: receptive or expressive–or both. Receptive language disorders include but not limited to the following: difficulty following directions, reading comprehension, understanding written/spoken language and auditory processing. Expressive language disorders include delays in acquiring age-appropriate vocabulary, inability to initiate and maintain conversation, weak grammar skills and poor writing ability.
